Climate Science Watch Founder, Rick Piltz |
As one of its key activities, Climate Science Watch will be a watchdog of the federal Climate Change Science Program. The federal program embodies a highly problematical relationship between the climate research community, on the one hand, and the policy and political arenas on the other. Climate Science Watch will serve as a voice of independent oversight and critical analysis, setting the record straight on the relationship between science and politics in the federal climate science program and advocating reforms to uphold the credibility and integrity to the program.
Climate Science Watch was initiated in the summer of 2005. For 14 years, Rick Piltz, the founder and director, held positions in Washington that allowed a first-hand observation of how the science of climate change and related research is used and misused by public officials and special interest groups. From 1995 until resigning in March 2005 he served in senior positions in the office of the U.S. Climate Change Science Program (CCSP), the program that coordinates support for climate and global change research by 13 federal agencies. From 1991-1994 he was a professional staff member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, supporting the committee's oversight of climate change and energy technology issues.
Public controversy, limited understanding, and misuse of climate science are not going to end in the near term. But the problem of climate change is not going to disappear, either. It must be confronted.
